Lee was good at maneuver warfare, but that style wasted far too many men that he couldn't afford to waste. He should have dug in and defended from day 1. Eventually he figured it out at Cold Harbor, but by then it was far too late. Overrated general...https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1050901081537073155 …

Manuever warfare generally results in far fewer casualties. Grant forced Lee into attrition warfare. I'll see if I can find some papers on the mitary science involved but Lee was really good. Grant was the first Union general to figure out his critical vulnerability.

Well, not really. The highest-casualty battles in the Eastern theater came before Grant arrived to face Lee.

I think you're conflating tactics with strategy. Two different things.

There's a reason every military officer in the US today is drilled in manuever warfare...it's not because its more costly.

Well sometimes you need to do it. But sometimes you need to not do it. In the South's case, it was just far too costly.

We might be using different definitions here.

I think you have to compare what he did to his alternatives. If he had gone to a static position around Richmond or some other city little Napolean would have pinned him down and starved him out. War over in a couple of years.

I'm not making a political argument here...I'm just saying this argument sounds like "Rommel is overrated because he lost in Europe." I can hold the idea that Nazis suck and Rommel was an incredible general at the same time. Same for Lee.
