This. It's great for a nation to have a civil discourse. But how can you expect Democrats to be unilaterally civil when Trump in office, wielding maximum incivility against half of the country?https://twitter.com/ThePlumLineGS/status/1050751805704036352 …

Why is the mob so angry? Because Trump is ripping the country apart with deliberate racist provocation and hate. Debating "civility" without this fact front and center is akin to diagnosing advanced brain cancer while ignoring the tumor. it's easy if it's just a front for painting the opposition party as illegitimate and undeserving of governance in preparation for them winning a major election

You aren't civil because your interlocutors are civil. Or because you hope to gain something from your civility. Being civil is an end in itself.

In cases where unilateral civility contributes to a failure to stop amoral outcomes, civility is wrong.

Nope. Civility is its own end. It isn't a means to accomplish something. Take care now.

Trump WANTS the incivility to fuel his political narrative. I figured his trolling strategy out a long time ago. Unfortunately it’s probably impossible not to feed this particular troll, but it’s a matter of strategy not to feed his narrative any more than necessary.

I'm all for the exchange of ideas and learning about each others positions - but you have to acknowledge when there's no norm of reciprocity and act accordingly. That's a necessity.

The thing manners do, is that they avoid pressing buttons with our old animal instincts. Trump has pressed Democrat buttons and they've responded. But all they've done is react. They haven't shown principle or tried to lead something positive.

Attacking people always provokes undesirable emotion. The Democrats should go for a more honest analysis of Trump's policy positions, as well as come up with good suggestions of their own. There's no point in complaining if you can't lead towards something better either.

I expect the Democrats to at least try, if they can, to emulate old Barack Obama and have conversations that penetrate outsiders rather than use divisive rhetoric to toxify their base in order to get that extra electoral kick.
