Makes zero sense to build a bunch of high rises in the Bay Area only to have to tear them down when it’s time to build starfleet academy.

That's how Japan does things.

"But if we build more housing, prices will rise!" Where does this logic even come from?
-
Motivated reasoning? :D

It's almost like basic econ classes should be required haha

I lost the screenshot, but someone on NextDoor actually said: "Just thinking about <Bay Area City> turn into Tokyo makes me sick to my stomach!"
-
They have zero idea what Tokyo is like.
-
They don’t need to. They have already seen heaven on earth.https://twitter.com/nextdoorsv/status/986678305024892935?s=21 …

You see unlike Tokyo, San Francisco is built on a bay! Wait, I'll come in again.

Someone on NextDoor once replied: You can't compare us. We're different countries. Well. OK then.

You spelled “but if we build more housing, ‘those people’ will enter our neighborhood!” wrong.
-
Gotta preserve the ‘character of the neighborhood’, ya’ know.

Increased supply + consistent demand = increased value? I think I just heard my Econ teacher have a stroke.

I thought NIMBYs were usually arguing that if you build more housing, their own home values will fall, which actually makes sense, selfish as it is
-
That would be an honest argument. It's a lot better to argue that you're against building more housing to save the environment - no one every points this out:https://twitter.com/nextdoorsv/status/1047559489849839617 …

Yeah but wouldn’t building more high density housing be better for the environment because there wouldn’t be as much deforestation as single family houses, and higher density housing allows people to walk/mass transport to work instead of driving?
