8/Like Reihan, I favor a skills-based immigration system that also allows family reunification, like the one Canada uses. But my case for it relies a lot more on direct economic benefits, and less on prophecies of race war! (end)

Low skilled immigration dropped years ago. In some cases we saw a reversal trend during and after the great recession which continues to this day: voluntary repatriation. This includes undocumented workers. Especially from Mexico which has seen some good changes recently.

immigration composition seems like a very fluid thing (esp going forward) and ignoring some possible effect just because its cause hasn't happened in 20 years (due to both policy and at least temporary relative stability in those regions) seems shortsighted

Except the Trump/Sessions draconian policies try to undo what's done in terms of low skill immigrants--exacerbating racial tensions for short term political gain (and making employers of low skilled labor, e.g. dairies, in increasingly untenable positions)
