I feel like Judis and Teixeira did America a double disservice. By convincing both parties that ethnic bloc voting + demographic destiny = permanent Dem dominance, they made the Dems complacent and the GOP insane and xenophobic.

Someone should tell the author that Hispanic means someone of Spanish descent. They didn't use "Chicano" once. There are a number of reasons why some Hispanics and Latinos, and probably to a lesser extent Chicanos, might like Trump.

Does anyone say Chicano anymore? These days I only hear Latino or Latinx.

Prof Raymond Buriel (may he rest in peace) taught us to use the terms accurately, although that is usually the case in psychology classes. I'm not Chicano, but I certainly got the impression from him that he preferred the term, and did not like being called Hispanic.

If anyone is wondering: Chicano means Mexican-American, Latino means from Latin America, and Hispanic means from Spanish descent.

The Census defines Hispanic as "a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race".

Thanks, that's interesting. I assume it is to keep things simple as there are only seven racial categories in the Census, so it's not surprising that the definition if overly-broad.

Fair enough, but I'd advocate delineating in your own writing. A lot of original peoples from Latin America & Mexico, whose ancestors suffered at the hands of the Spanish, would be included in that definition, and I doubt they'd identify as Hispanic before Chicano/Latino.

Yes I've been saying this for years. The 2nd, 3rd generation Hispanic vote will become like my old italian family soon enough: Rabid, lunatic republicans who cannot wait to be seen as the mythological "real Americans"

None of these analyses seem to take into account the fact that latinos are not a homogenous voting bloc.

Yeah, I was thinking especially of Cubans, but (based on personal experience) many naturalized South Americans who emigrated to the US in the 70's & 80's tend to have come from the upper classes of society, and generally lean more conservative, escaping Bolivarism & instability.

It's disturbing to see anyone "counting on Hispanic voters to save them." This feeds into racist narratives. White Nationalists often attempt to argue to white libertarians that racial-diversity is bad because it supposedly leads to fewer freedoms via Democrats winning elections.

Headlines like this out-of-context could be spun to suggest Democrats view Hispanics as political resources. White nationalists would use this to argue immigration is about the left securing political dominance over the right.

I absolutely agree. Although it's true that different demographic groups have different voting patterns, this shouldn't be focused on too heavily. By focusing on these patterns we start forming associations between racial-groups and political interests.https://twitter.com/Noahpinion/status/1050222527887302656 …

When we start associating racial-groups with particular political interests, then political tribalism (i.e. partisanship) could be easily be redirected into racial-tribalism by cynical propagandists/racists.

Such a generally stupid narrative. Political parties mold their messages to the desires of ~50% of the electorate. That’s the implicit end result of an adversarial political system. It’s a bit of a guessing game to figure out how to get the last little bit without losing others.
