I don’t know why the left/right wing dichotomy even needs to exist. It only encourages more people to align with beliefs they might not otherwise have, just because those beliefs are on the side of those they feel strongly about, even though they sometimes contradict one another.

Party loyalty saves people from the bother of thinking. If you pick a side, you don't have to consider each issue on its merits. You can go with the herd you've chosen. People don't like to think of it that way, but I'm (VERY crudely) paraphrasing JS Mill.

Free speech is an issue for the people not in power and the intellectuals. Since progressives are in power in academia they don't care about free speech anymore. They will care again if things change.

Ideas that used to be left-wing but are now right-wing: • Elites are bad. • Our enemies are those who wield cultural hegemony. • Tariffs are good for our economy. • The working class is the nation. • The system is rigged.

More like "things that used to be mostly right-wing but are now left-wing too" Let's not pretend the sorry state of the left means the right suddenly became the side of reason and humanity
