So I've gotten a bunch more followers since that interview with me went modestly viral, and I want to let folks know what happened after that video was taken. The DHS goons waited until the Wall of Moms started to go home before they escalated aggression. 1/

In no way am I criticizing the moms for not being able to stay there all night. By definition, they got kids to take care of. By 12:30 or so, there were fewer yellow shirts in the crowd, and more pepperballs and teargas coming our way from the building. 2/

Around 12:45 or so, they came rushing out en masse, and they targeted me first. Probably because I was almost the only person in the front lines without a full gas mask, an omission I will not be repeating. I was shot in the face at point-blank range; with what, I'm not sure. 3/

I've been pepper-sprayed before, and this didn't feel like that. It felt like a heavy impact, even through the fence, which suggests the fence may have broken up some kind of projectile on its way to my face, but that's speculation. 4/

What I know for sure is that I was blinded instantly and in intense pain, much worse than conventional pepper spray. I could barely breathe, and lost my mask as I clawed it off in an attempt to find oxygen. Street medics saved my ass that night, no question. 5/

An aside: If you're looking to donate to support the protest efforts, @RiotRibs has more money than they can spend and so does the Portland Freedom Fund, but as far as I know, the Rosehip Medics are still taking donations. https://www.rosehipmedics.org/  6/

The medics got me away from the worst of the violence, rinsed my eyes out, and helped me get my breathing back. Eventually they helped me to a safer location another block away. This is where the nature of whatever the DHS hit me with started to make itself clear. 7/

Normally when you get pepper-sprayed, it's temporarily incapacitating, but a good solid eye rinse, a lot of blinking, maybe another rinse, and you're okay in 15-20 minutes. But that night, every few minutes, my eyes would start burning again as though I'd just been hit. 8/

It took nearly an hour before I was able to keep my vision clear long enough to stagger a couple blocks away and get a ride home. Another hour and a half at home, even after a long shower, before I could lie down and try to sleep. 9/

Two days later, I still can't touch my helmet or my shield without coughing and sneezing. Whatever they hit me with was not normal pepper spray, and I'm morbidly curious what the hell it WAS. All I know for sure is they waited for the moms to leave, and targeted me first. 10/

Let me be clear, I WILL be going back out there. I meant what I said in that interview. We have a duty to stand up against injustice, and the young activists who've been out there every night for two months enact that ideal way better than some middle-aged schmuck like me. 11/

When I'm out there again, look for a guy in a full-face gas mask, because those bastards aren't going to get me the same way twice. They blinded me and hurt me, but if they were trying to scare me off, they failed. 12/12

          Replying to @NoahBrand1

Let me be sure I understand: your crime was that you were standing at a location near where property damage is alleged to have happened in the past, and you looked vulnerable. Do I have that right? And you believe they deliberately applied a chemical agent prohibited in war.
