I like a lot of the cons I go to. That's why I keep coming back and the manic energy gels well with me. But the "duct tape and dreams" approach really gets us here to 2021 when the pressure exposed a lot of fissures.

Agreed. I go to BGGCon, but mostly because I have friends that I only see there. It’s just too large for an introvert like me to handle for any length of time.

I am hoping somewhat that the slow uptick in online press events means that I can start shifting my Business Cons to more Friend and Game Cons. Lower stress. But yeah there's all kinds of DEI issues with current cons; hoping a thoughtful re-evaluation leads to something better.

At Gen Con two years ago, I cut through the atrium of the Hyatt hotel downtown, and there were casual games at tables everywhere, with people just casually milling around. It was quiet, calm, friendly, and pleasant. I'd travel to be a part of any con that offered more of that.

I think the French model of family friendly games festivals that focus on playing games rather than selling them as a primary objective (but end up bringing new people into the hobby) is a good way to do it. Low/no cost of entry; my local one had 1500 entries over two days.

We do this here in Scandinavia as well. Selling games is maybe 10% of the convention.
