It's a pretty good allegory for the Internet -- we're all just observing something that was free, wild and good become something that turns massive profits for the few off our backs.

That's a liberal we by the way. I've never paid for music online. I only pay for vinyl.

Because the labels bought into Spotify when it was cheap and changed the contracts to their benefit. Here's how the money from Spotify is distributed. If you think it's fair, you're probably a record company executive.pic.twitter.com/blgVHG9OWc

This is what's missing from most of the anti-Spotify conversation. I would argue that Spotify is good for independent artists (who keep all three pieces of the pie). Labels have been taking advantage forever, maybe they're the root of the problem?

I get paid massively well through my Bandcamp site compared to all streaming services (for every $100 I have gotten from Bandcamp, I have gotten $.01 from streaming services). I can’t live off of it but it’s solid recognition that I did something of value.

Bandcamp is great. I love the feature that allows me to see what other music has been purchased by people who bought what I did - I’ve found some cool stuff that way.

know a lot of musicians. best way to get the most cash to them is buy their CD/music at the concert or off their web site. oddly, second best percentage used to be apple store...

Bandcamp pays better than Apple, so I always check there first.
