A quick thread on the economics of a much higher top rate for the super-rich. TL;DR version is that is on very solid ground here. There is a lot of evidence that from an economic and fiscal perspective, we'd be way better off with top rates approaching 70.

  7. Ocasio-Cortez wants a 70-80% income tax on the rich. I agree! Start with the Koch Bros. -- and also make it WEALTH tax.

Piketty, Saez and Stantcheva calculate that the optimal top tax rate is around 83%. There's your laffer curve.

As of FY 2019 the War on Terror has cost $2T. And there was no PAYGO. Instead, there were 2 GWB tax cuts, Medicare D, a mini stimulus, Obama stimulus, and Trump tax cut. Anyone who says GND needs a PAYGO has to tell us why none of the above needed PAYGO.

  10. The ~$22T “national debt”—a.k.a. the 💵 spent by government and not taxed back, which is currently being saved in the form of US Treasuries—is not a debt crisis. It’s just another way to hold 💵.

  11. Yesterday we started a convo w/ the rules pkg about ending , a political policy lacking economic merit that sabotages progress where Americans value it most: healthcare, education, housing, & more. Today I’m proud to cosponsor legislation w/ to end it.

All of these things have a bearing on the extent to which one might support, say, getting rid of the filibuster to pass something without the GOP. A conciliatory politician would be less willing to break norms and attempt that. Obviously, this has policy implications.

  15. And just like that: everybody's now talking about whether to tax the wealthy at 70%. That's called shaping the conversation.

Does anyone know what triggers OMB scoring of a piece of legislation that has not yet passed?

This Bernie clip is amazing “we don’t use bad words in the senate... we starve little children, we bomb buses of children, and give tax breaks to billionaires, but we don’t use bad words”

  20. I expect 5-4 rulings deciding that partisan gerrymandering can't be ruled unconstitutional at the federal level, thanks to Mitch McConnell stealing a Supreme Court seat & Trump putting an attempted rapist on the court
