Talking about the development and aid industry especially in Africa can be quite tricky.
You have people who are cyclical about the whole thing and say Africa doesn't need help.

You have others who say we do, but over the years it hasn't really worked and then maybe those who just loathe

It'd be easy for you, a privileged person, to assume we don't need help. I think volunteerism is commendable...

but like every other industry, it's deeply flawed. No doubt, a lot of Westerners mean well when they decide to help Africa..

but you need to really examine where you put your money.

It's easy to be swayed by clever marketing strategies that make you pay an exorbitant fee to spend 2 weeks in Uganda building an orphanage..

which you have no real skills for.

All this to say, we cannot just discount the aid industry because a number of people and organisations are doing it wrong..

neither can we say every Westerner that offers help is self seeking.
