Interested in how populations adapt to a new niche to which they have gained access following the acquisition of a novel trait? Our preprint addresses this question. Here is a short thread on some of our findings 1/

Motor proteins have always fascinated me. I have showed students videos of dynein and kinesin transporting goods each of the times I’ve TA’d. A beautiful example of the universe within.

It appears that #45 will walk acquitted of all charges come Wednesday. Such an acquittal is a prime example of what privilege looks like. Come Wednesday, #45 will forever be, in my book, considered America’s Type II Error.

On two separate occasions this week I was told to start thinking about the classes and content I would like to teach as faculty. Now, I’m usually not one for heebie jeebies, but I think the universe is talking to me.

What happens after an evolutionary innovation? Very interesting study by (and others) that describes this in great detail.

I'm thrilled to announce that I have accepted a postdoc position with Jake Scott () at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute ! I'll be studying the evolution of resistance in both bacteria and cancer. I can't wait to get started!

Our results suggest that genomes exhibit a latent potential for adaptation to new niches. However, the persistent high rates of cell death suggest that long periods of adaptation may sometimes be necessary before a new ecotype becomes fully fitted to its new position in nature.

We also found parallel amplifications in six of the genomes. Among the amplifications, maeA, was always included. Competition assays revealed that this gene was highly beneficial, conferring a fitness advantage upwards of 25%. 9/

Interestingly, death was still observed in the Cit+ clone some 20,000 generations after the phenotype evolved. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. 8/

We also discovered that the evolution of aerobic growth on citrate is associated with elevated cell mortality; Cell death evolved!!! We observed high proportions of death on the order of 29-53% depending on clone and medium treatment. 7/

The growth rates of most DM0 and DM25 evolved clones increased and their lag-phase shortened during the experiment. 6/

The populations that evolved in the citrate-only DM0 medium accumulated more mutations than those in DM25. Their mutation spectra were different, too. Genome evolution in DM0 was dominated by IS insertions. 5/

We also evolved these 12 populations in citrate media containing glucose (DM25 – the basal LTEE media). We compared the growth of the citrate-only evolved clones to the growth of their ancestors in both DM0 and DM25. 4/

To address this question, we isolated three early Cit+ clones and spontaneous Ara+ mutants of each. We then evolved two replicate populations of each clone and revertant, generating 12 total populations that were then evolved for 2500 generations in citrate only media (DM0). 3/

We were interested in how the sole population that evolved the ability utilize citrate in th LTEE (herein referred to as Cit+) would adapt to the newly accessible citrate-only environment. 2/
