First I just wanna say, up to 2014 I feel like rewind has been great, the focus of it was clearly on the yearly trends not necessarily on youtube but on the internet as a whole

Then here's where the problems started popping up, 2012 was clearly about the trends, and if someone was featured it was because they changed youtube as a whole. A lot of sexual/not ad friendly references were made but it was a really good summary of what 2012 was

Plus the main focus was the TRENDS OF THE YEAR. In 2013, they snuck a couple celebrities who weren't really youtubers at all, but the main features were:
Show this thread -
1) The video was 99% music 2) People who were given screen time were there for a reason 3) Showed evolution of internet culture without being completely G rated 4) Had a really light tone with some BOPS

In 2014, that's when things got kinda weird. At certain parts in the video, it looked like they just crammed in celebrities and youtubers out of obligation rather than the youtubers actually doing anything
Show this thread -
Still, the video didn't feel extremely corporate, and it really did feel like a summary of 2014
Show this thread -
2015 started off strong with iiSuperwomanii leading it off cause she was really HUGE at the time so it was really fitting for youtube culture
Show this thread -
it felt really corporate in some parts but i really remembered watching this one right as it came out. I was H Y P E. it was weird because of some of the sexual wrecking ball/blurred lines stuff was kinda gone.

And in general there was just too much talking, like It was kinda cute but like ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh the "creator made" magic just felt a little bit gone

time for 2016, this is where there was just ??? WHAT HAPPENED?? THE ROCK ISNT A YOUTUBEr HOW DOES HE REPRESENt thE INtERNEt???? OR TRENDS??? WHAT DID HE DO??? Theres still more trend than not trend but really?? this isnt the internet???

Funnily enough, I remember 2016 as the year copyright started going downhill on youtube, this rewind felt kinda like a product. Mild sexual reference once I guess? but it feels like youtube was afraid to be youtube at some parts
Show this thread -
Like, they just crammed wayyyy too many people on one screen like I couldn't even process who was being featured. It was the first time i was like "hey,,, this is something i didn't really enjoy :("

2017 marked the breaking point. It started corporate and featured safety youtubers. youtube no longer does the hidden link cute thing. They don't poke fun at internet culture, and they instead glorify celebrity culture.
Show this thread -
there was TOO MUCH TALKING i dont understand the reason for all the talking I dont need my trends explained to me im not a 87 year old going on the internet for the first time like for real what
Show this thread -
The focus started to shift from the actual content of the video to the people in it and the production value, which isn't a bad thing, but it feels less of a summary of internet 2017 and more of a video with a bunch of famous people in it
Show this thread -
there just wasn't much integrity left, everyone was crammed into one space, and there was a small section in the middle to be respectful but that completely took away from the peppy "look at the internet everyone created!" tone

Youtube lost its "made from the ground up" vibe and I kinda hated it lol

with a 2 minute segment that was farted out of youtube's script writing machine
Show this thread -
this was a fart of a rewind and everyone knows it, yeah sure trends whatever, but they ignored some huge things (logan vs. ksi,, pewds vs tseries, tide pods, etc) cause they werent ad-friendly
Show this thread -
i grew up with youtube and the complete disregard for any of the people who actually use the website was frankly insulting
Show this thread -
i don't care, some parts were kinda cute and i know this wont fix anything but i needed that V E N T
