Why am I being punished for buying the game on release?

How so? I don't see how you are being punished simply because they are releasing a goty edition. Are you being punished when they move games into the nintendo selects line?
-
A GOTY edition would imply something like DLC you can purchase separately. This is content/products you LITERALLY cannot acquire any other way, though.
-
Except you could buy a strategy guide at launch... so unless you want the stickers no difference.

2017: I’ll skip out on the initial eShop only releases like Snipperclips and wait for the eventual physical release. 2018: I’ll skip out on the initial physical release and wait for the eventual sticker release.

in b4 Super Mario Odyssey: Starter Edition. Makes sense really since Super Mario Odyssey allowed the player to personalize The Odyssey - literally with stickers. It is only a matter of time before the game’s second coming.pic.twitter.com/Rr08HsjR79

Strategy guide: 100 pages of "use nzap 85 if you can aim, octobrush if you can't"
-
I have basically learned that every weapon except the N-Zap '85 is useless at this point.
-
Octobrush? My good sir I think you meant Clash blaster
-
I've never been killed standing behind a Clash Blaster
-
Think of how many times a clash blaster has killed you around the corner
-
At least they were pointed at me
