my view of this is different. I don't think the "old curmudgeons with money" are really the problem in this context. They're a problem in a different manner, but really I think the majority of them couldn't give a shit let alone two. -
I would disentangle this to a broader picture. The ultra-wealthy have political sway but their intent is usually to benefit themselves financially (which usually results in some form of disenfranchisement). The problem is that they are a small class quantitatively.
