Maybe because Kiev did not want to guarantee coal-mining Donbass Russian-language rights, and it rebelled. "Expert."https://twitter.com/brainbatter/status/880887864661233665 …

Maybe because coal is a dying commodity..? Maybe because their mines are running out..? Stop with the strawman talking points.

Yet another Maidan achievement: there are 1,700 medical facilities in Ukraine in 2016 as compared to 2,900 in 2006. http://www.unn.com.ua/uk/news/1673924-kilkist-likarnyanikh-zakladiv-v-ukrayini-za-10-rokiv-zmenshilasya-mayzhe-vdvichi …pic.twitter.com/CaIISjqyKw

Alhough we could argue that this is a good thing in terms of climate change, the loss of such a major industry is very bad for Ukrainians

If this massive loss of coal production was accompanied by replacement with renewables--yes.

It's replaced by using a lot less energy. Because the country's industry is decimated across the board. And domestic consumption also down

Part of it is due to not counting coal production and consumption in the Donbass region and also home owners using their own gas boilers.

True - and the post-coup reduction is just the bit at the right-hand end, 2014 onwards. But still dramatic. Would be good to see the detail

Ukraine doesn't have the right climate or geography for renewables other than wind turbines. US coal sales certainly give the US leverage…
