@Glossophiliac75 Nice! Both of my grandpas were lucky: one was up north with the Murmansk Run, the other—in Tbilisi building bomb shelters. -
@NinaByzantina One of his legs was amputated and the other mangled, so he didn't serve in the war. Probably why my dad was born later. -
Similar story: this grandpa volunteered the first day of the war when everything was disorganized.

His friend convinced him to return the next day. He did and failed the medical. Everyone from the previous day died.
