Small, shiny and appealing to children, button batteries can result in a major injury and even death if swallowed. Learn more on what to do if you think your child has ingested a button battery, and take precautions to prevent injuries:

When a child puts a button battery in their ear, nose, or mouth, the symptoms often look similar to those of a common infection, making it challenging for doctors to diagnose. Every minute counts to prevent serious injuries.

Also my attending and senior resident gave me great, actionable advice on how to finish them faster instead of chastising me and vaguely saying “be more efficient.” Good , even for one shift, is so invaluable. Makes me excited to try again tonight!

Spent way too long writing notes after my ED shift last night because I felt guilty writing them before picking up new patients. Then I was reminded that writing notes is part of my job, and is letting myself do my job and leave on time.

When adversity strikes, I often think I have to choose between being mad at it or growing from it. I'm learning this is a false choice. It is possible to simultaneously be mad about the injustice, fight for what I need, accept what I can't change, and grow stronger and better.

Had a mom tell us about how much time she puts into finding the best hospital for her kids because, well...they're her kids. Man. What a privilege to be that hospital and to get to take care of her children and all of the other children we get to treat.

Was having a long week...then got to see one of my continuity patients in clinic. He's adorable, but mostly I look forward to seeing his mom because we chat like girlfriends who have known each other for years ☺️♥️

This month I've visited local organizations addressing health disparities due to social determinants. I'm also trying to plan my vacations and feeling so guilty. So...question for ... How do you balance taking care of yourself and taking care of your patients?

This week has just been slow and rough...learning about my community and the challenges faced by our patients has been eye-opening, but rocked me to my core. Trying to show some and write about it.

In case you are wondering & OBVIOUSLY inspired by nothing (sarcasm font): Even mental health professionals don't like getting new therapists (& postpone), worry about actually liking them, dread telling their story AGAIN, & CANNOT come up with treatment goals

"In 2017–18 [in the US], about 61,000 people died, including 643 children (that’s some 20,000 more than die each year from breast cancer)." I know flu isn't as sexy and new as coronavirus...but it's here to kill.

Why matters. I asked my mom if she had to choose between food, housing, healthcare or a green card. She said the green card. "The opportunity to be a US citizen was non-negotiable." Fighting for kids no matter where their parents come from is non-negotiable.

I have my first in-person therapy appointment tonight. And...even as someone who advocates for the value of therapy to literally everyone, I am still apprehensive about opening up to another person. It's hard, but important.

New Blog Post: I am no expert on , but I have been thinking about it a lot lately since Kobe Bryant's death. If you were deeply affected by it (or not at all), I hope you take a moment to think and write about loss.
