For cultivating a vibrant forum for discussion, yes. Biggest problem, Reddit is not controlled by YOU or anyone on your side. Shut down possible at any time, at the mercy of Reddit administration. Would an official Social Matter BBS, run by competent people not be preferable?

We did have that for a while. It was abrogated in favor a reddit channel and a private medium. Private media has been fantastic, but obv very hard to break into.

We would certainly *like* to see more discussion on the subreddit. We're unlikely to draw ire from TPTB since we are uncommonly civil.

Lastly, I should say that you COULD argue that this is meritocratic rather than democratic in a small community full of (hopefully) rational human beings that would read Social Matter, but I'm cynical. In sectional disputes I think people would be quick to downvote...

Of course there are also structural problems inherent to the Reddit design. The karma system shares many problems with democracy. It encourages posters to tailor posts to fit the tastes of the majority for maximum exposure.
