Water is not as rare as one would think in the Atacama desert. It gives good opportunities for reflection

The Sun hasn't been that idle in the past weeks and has produced some decent sporadic substorms at high latitudes. Timelapse recorded on Senja, Norway in the past 6 days

Last night was once again magical with some nice aurora dancing in the moonlight between snow showers on Senja island, Norway

I had my first-night guiding last night for Lights Over Lapland after getting back to Abisko. We had a superb aurora at about 11pm. This image was from the same night last year at the same time, in the same direction and it looked almost exactly the same! How weird is that?pic.twitter.com/3B05jCQoyl

Nacreous clouds timelapse from the outbreak we had this season. These are so colorful and fascinating! Some locals call them daytime aurora

Still all clouds and snow up here. Feels like there'll never be a starry sky again! Friends, sneeze and cough into your elbow, wash your hands(!) and please stay home if you're sick. It really is flu season right now.

The past 10 days have been incredible for aurora whilst the first 20 days of January have the complete opposite. Here's to prove the former with images taken from Senja island in Arctic Norway.

A little more from a magic night with my workshop group on the Lofoten Isles the other week. Quick pitstop for a few nights in London, and now in the wet, miserable, mild south of the UK, no time for blues though, Scotland next week : )

The blue tip of the aurora comes from diatomic nitrogen stirred upwards in auroral currents during enhanced geomagnetic activity. High up it catches the sun light and UVs make it glow blue, same process as airglow
