What do you mean? It's a serious question: How much control did you have over the situation, vs how much was in the hands of others?
There was the official tour, but we were free to do our own thing, I spoke to cleaners, hotel staff, shop keepers who spoke English.

A Russian political party arranged your accommodations. Did you really expect the hotel staff to talk straight?

It wasn't just at the Hotel, it was in shops, I smoke, so people I met I smoking areas, security guards, etc.

These random people - did you approach them or did they approach you? Did you speak in English or with an interpreter?

I approached them, in English, if they didn't speak English I just shrugged and moved on.

Maybe they understood English but didn't want to speak for fear of repercussions. They knew you were being watched

Maybe, and maybe you are too paranoid, I was conscious of the concern which is why I made the efforts on my own.
