The markings on the shown 240 mm film roll cannister reads '618' but with some goodwill it almost and appropiately reads as "GIS" - an abbrevation for Greenland Ice Sheet!

Sixty years ago, Expédition Glaciologique Internationale Au Groenland and the Danish Geodetic Inst did aerial photo surveys along 500km of the W Greenland Ice Sheet. With support from US Navy aerial photos from 1953 will also be added to the data .

'Jakobshavngletscher' is one of the two 'Grönlandic" Glaciers in the photo. The name of the other glacier doesn't ring a bell. Probably on the West Coast, as I suspect it was measured by Heinrich Rink.

Today, glacier ice discharge is easily measured through remote sensing, but how was it done in the pre-satellite era ?! Read all about it in our latest blog post by and B. Vandecrux here:

This is a very cool read! Historical Greenland Ice Sheet expeditions, exotic equipment being tested out on the ice sheet, people and their stories you may not have known about. Finnish Aerosleds in Greenland, the 1930 Wegener Expedition and Arvo Tervasmaa
