Assignment for my high school programming class: make up two problem statements involving files, and solve them. Anyway, I wonder whether I could write a compiler in four evenings.

It's the year 2020, and we're still finding buffer overflows in programs written in C. Fortunately, those programs are only esoteric, rarely installed programs like... <checks notes> sudo.

So apparently there's "geometric algebra" and "algebraic geometry" and they deal with entirely different things. Apart from the fact they both deal with geometry and algebra, obviously. Someone once said math doesn't have cache invalidation so they catch up by naming stuff badly

My student Denis wrote a formal semantics for the French tax code, complete with Coq proof of soundness and SMT queries to uncover unfair tax hikes. PL for fiscal justice! https://blog.merigoux.ovh/en/2019/12/20/taxes-formal-proofs.html …

NP Hard is when some task you did for someone was labor intensive to which you reply to their Thank You with, No Problem as if it was a trivial thing so do. NP Complete is when you feel like a complete fool and reply to an awkward Thank You in a weird situation with No Problem.

My HN karma has plateau'd at 256, and I'm amused by that like some primitive numerologist.

So you know those bug debugging stories that are like, the programmer equivalent of detective stories? Here's one so great it's the reason I'm tweeting at 3 AM: https://www.teamten.com/lawrence/writings/coding-machines/ …

So, after some research it seems that the interface transfers a raw MFM bitstream, and I don't have the capability to accurately toggle a switch hundreds of thousands of times a second. I could build some digital circuit that would help with this, but... I kinda already have one.

A *totally separate* issue (no, really, totally separate) is that I don't seem to own any computer that has both a floppy drive and a network card.

It's perfectly normal for a train of thought to stop by at "I wonder whether I can bitbang the pins on a floppy drive with some DIP switches", right? I wonder if
@Foone ever tried doing that. Seems like a thing they would do.Prikaži ovu nitHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi

So dusted off my Splash-based Swift editor prototype and built a feature that automatically generates models based on how they're being used. What do you think?
