WNC to South America is at min 2,000 miles. These birds weigh 1/3 oz and they do it every year. The physics alone are mind boggling. Hats off to @NCWildlife & @AudubonNC for tagging & tracking. nc.audubon.org/news/tagged-go

So proud of this new research led by Kayla Davis where we reveal strategies to improve the population recovery of MI Black Terns!

New research from @audubonsociety and @michiganstateu is providing valuable new insights to help conserve the Black Tern, a migratory bird species whose population has plummeted over the past several decades in Michigan and nationwide. Learn more: gl.audubon.org/news/audubon-a

Check out this great animation and story. Birds cross borders, so our efforts to conserve them needs to as well!

Birds don't recognize borders, so we need a global approach to protecting wildlife. We partnered with @ParksCanada, the Canadian Wildlife Service, and @BirdsCanada to see how birds in Canada's national parks are faring in a changing climate. #BirdsTellUs youtu.be/Lg95h8VaRyI

Exciting new paper alert!
Quote Tweet
Yay! our #OA paper examining the pre-migratory distribution of monarchs is a Ecol & Evol #topdownloadedarticle. The lead author, @ImanMomeni2 is as brilliant & nice as they come :) Ping @Joe_Ecology. Access: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10
I like this infographic, but in retrospect, I wish the title was different. It should read The first pre-migration distribution map of monarchs using citizen science ;). The paper is being used to set recovery targets for the species in Canada! Super pumped. We can use the proportions Iman estimated to estimate the number of butterflies in each state and Province (with some estimates of mortality from other papers). We also think each monarch requires 29 stems of milkweed to replace its self in the fall migratory population. Therefore, we can estimate how many milkweed stems we need in each province and state to support the 6 ha recovery target on the wintering grounds.

The BP oil spill killed countless birds and continues to affect many others to this day. And because they’re migratory in nature, they aren’t just the Gulf’s birds either—they’re all of our birds.

Right now, 2.1 billion birds like the Common Tern are passing through the Gulf of Mexico as they migrate to their nesting grounds thousands of miles away in far-off locations like the Boreal forest in Canada. audubon.org/news/common-te

Not one but two documented wolverine sightings in the Portland area in a week? Incredible!

Hey, is that a wolverine…again? The bushy tail, blackish brown coat and pale brown stripe along its side certainly look wolverine-like! A second sighting of the wolverine was reported in Damascus, Oregon on Wednesday after an initial sighting along the Columbia River on Monday.

If you want to do any of the following: - produce improved BBS-derived population estimates that account for species-specific impacts of roadside surveys on detection - correct for imperfect detection using count data w/o ancillary data (e.g., BBS, even stationary eBird) ...(7/)

This was huge, because simulations showed that these forms of detection correction have the least bias, & existing R packages only analyzed availability or perceptibility. Building custom Bayesian models is complicated & requires truncating detection distances, losing data (4/)
