I have a younger cousin, she’s 9. Lately she has been coming home really sad and I asked her what’s wrong. She said she’s anxious cause of school.

I asked why? She said her two friends keep fighting and she always has to be peacemaker and stop them. EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Due to this, she has been very anxious and even showing symptoms of depression. She’s only 9. Her teacher even praises her for being a peacemaker. It’s insane cause nobody is asking her how she is?? She’s literally exhausted

She has the burden of having to always carry the emotional burden of keeping the peace within her friend group and it’s a lot for a young black girl. Nobody thinks of these things.

Literally my little cousin is going through having divorced parents but nobody at her school even cares about those things. Black girls are literally always forgotten. We are putting her in therapy soon.

From a VERY young age, black women carry the weight of the world and people depend on them so early. From young black girls who have to be the second mother to the young black girl who has a dysfunctional household and has to keep it all together. It’s mentally exhausting.

This doesn’t get discussed enough! I remember being 11 fantasizing about growing up & being on my own because I was forced to be responsible for other kids in my family and I knew that moving out was the only way out.
