If women attribute higher social status to bearded men, and if men's social status plays an important role in female mate choice & ratings of attractiveness, it would be surprising if the beard wasn't a factor in female mate choice.

Yes, that would be female mate choice. This would mean that women preference for beards and beardness are heritable, with genetic covariance between these two. However, beardness could develop in the total absence of female mate choice as well , through male-male competition.

it seems that both selective processes (intrasexual male-male competition & female mate choice) are happening at the same time shaping beardness. The question is which selective process is stronger (weapons vs ornaments)
