This is related to an issue I've been wrestling with recently, which is the relationship between instinct and habit. The difference, in my mind: Instincts are inherited. Habits are learned. Any thoughts on if the instincts *lead to* the habits?

It seems like "the assessment of visual cues of formidability" is an instinct, but to what degree? Are these behaviors totally on autopilot or are the instincts like the operating system that leads to related conditioned behaviors?

I disagree that instincts-inherited & habits-learned. The *ability* to assess formidability cues is adaptive/inherited; experience doing so, perhaps accuracy based on experience with formidable others, will also influence accuracy, etc. Can't say "X% of assessment is inherited"
