The highest paid professor at my uni is an oncology professor who made $978K last year. It looks like about 15-18 professors who aren't admin (some of them I'm not sure about, thus the range) made over $400K. I think most/all are in medicine. Nice gig if you can get it!

He basically has the *top job* at the university, and yes, some of them do really earn that much. Really shocked by this story, I did my PhD at Birkbeck.

Got it! Not familiar with UK titles at uni. Assumed it had to be an admin level post

Professors bringing in large grants are paid a pittance according to their worth - and often generate their own salaries in med schools. Others get "highest salary" contracts.

My concern is base Prof salaries are 65k with PhD. This is a joke and best students will go to industry.

I believe it mostly comes via grants. You can't write your raises to be higher than normal, but once you've got grants and move unis, you can demand higher salaries at new posts...and they'll pay them since the salaries are mostly recouped by the grants anyway.

Genetics can mean a lot but since most of these profs earn based on research and not classroom work, then that is the basis of the answer to your question.
