If I understand this right, using the measure of sharing 98.8% of my genes with a chimp, I share 100% of my genes with another human being. The 50% share with a sibling is about variants of the same gene.

Yes. With the chimp we’re talking about shared base pairs whereas with humans we’re talking about shared variants of genes (alleles).

we don't share 98% of our genes with chimps. we share 98% of our DNA. this is an important distinction; chimps have 48 chromosomes; a gene has hundreds of pairs of nucletides; small 1.2% difference in pairs leads to great changes. we share more than 99% with other humans
