Random genetic mutations are the only proven mechanism for creating genetic adaptations not natural selection. Natural selection allows the propagation of those mutations but doesn’t create them.
Of course natural selection does not create mutations. Natural selection creates adaptations from available genetic material. Random genetic mutations arise, which are then selected for or against (or not selected at all) via the process of natural selection.
Mutations lead to the ability to develop adaptive behaviors. Natural selection propagates both. For ex, frontal cortex function mutations led to behavioral changes taking advantage of increased cerebral function leading to survival advantages for modern humans over other hominids
Well yes, evolution by natural selection has allowed for increased complexity. That doesn’t change the fact that natural selection is responsible for creating adaptations from available genetic material.
