THANK YOU. I’ve seen a lot of posts recently about demanding that respect. It’s so uncalled for and a quick way to lose respect.

Agree. I’m indifferent to whether Dr is in your title, on your mail, or whatever (if it is an option or you want it go ahead and put it!). I’m just not going to walk around on the day-to-day making everyone address me as so.
-
Right. In certain contexts it certainly makes sense. But stopping somebody to correct them verbally before allowing them to continue is not just rude but is extremely condescending. (And yes I’m a first generation college student who grew up in the Midwest and all that as well)

Yea it just makes things..awkward tbh

I often contact academics I don't know personally -- usually bc I want them to do something for me: Dig up a PDF & send it to me, for ex. No, not like digging a ditch, but it's work - for a stranger. I err on side of respect: "Greetings, Dr. X" rather than "Yo, gimme PDF, Clark!"
-
When they sign their email "Clark," then I go to "Clark."
-
Same! I assume the way you sign off is what you want me to address you as. Always start with Dr at first exchange. And if I forget whether we’ve e-chatted before? Just go with Dr again.
-
Right. Grew up in Michigan with classic midwestern parents -- raised to err on side of treating people with respect, dignity. PS At the same time, my mom’s nobody’s fool or pushover -- tends to find M.D.s arrogant, for example.

"But I’m not going to expect & demand the person making my food . . . call me Dr. Seems silly imo" Seems [like a good way to get your food spat in] Fixed it for ya

If I still worked in a service role and someone insisted I call them Dr I'd pretend I didn't hear/understand just to fuck with them.
