My new book Crave The Rose: Anne Bronte At 200 is out now! Order from here: or Amazon or local bookshops. It contains many things unseen in a book before including Anne's final writing and first person encounters with the Brontes

Thank you so much for your kind words and lovely pictures over the last couple of days! 1846 Charlotte, Emily & Anne Bronte send a poetry manuscript to Aylott & Jones. 'Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell' would become the first published book by the sisters:

It's been a very hard few days thanks to a family health problem, and it won't be getting easier any time soon. To cheer myself up I'm posting four of my favourite works of art - if you have any pictures or paintings you love please share them below!

Not all reviews of Virginia Woolf were favourable. Take this example from 1921:

"For that spirit, seer, I've watched and sought my life-time long". The Philosopher, written by Emily Bronte 1845, is a magical, brilliant poem full of imagery and mystery:

Muriel Spark was born 1918. A great novelist in her own right, author of The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, she wrote many times about the Brontes and especially about her hero Emily Bronte: "I was fascinated by her creative mind because it was so entirely alien to my own."

1606 Guy Fawkes is the last of the 13 gunpowder plotters to be executed. Sentenced to be hung, drawn & quartered, so weak was he from torture that he died instantly when hung - 'the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions'

are out now. Spot one in Millais's "Mariana" (1851): it symbolises consolation and is the birthday flower for St Agnes' Eve? There's some other symbolism here too--

Agnes Grey left for Horton Lodge reflecting the life changing exit Anne Bronte made from Haworth to Thorp Green Hall in 1840. As her 1845 diary paper shows, the break from all she had known didn't go well and 5 years later she was back in Haworth.

A great post that reveals why Helen Graham, The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall and Anne Bronte remain so vital and important!

Yesterday was not only the anniversary of the publication of Villette but also of Pride And Prejudice! A good day for books, and as Virginia Woolf says here, "one may say that Pride And Prejudice is a good book"

Charlotte Bronte's great novel of love and loss, Villette, was published 1853. Here are four illustrations by Edmund Dulac from my beloved 1910 Villette volumes:
