Tokenization of off-chain things trust-minimizes only transfer of title. Short of entangled proplets http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/rob/Courses/InformationInSpeech/CDROM/Literature/LOTwinterschool2006/szabo.best.vwh.net/proplets.html … it doesn't do anything about actual control of the actual off-chain assets; it doesn't even guarantee respect for the title. h/t @eric_lombrozo's tanks.https://twitter.com/brucefenton/status/992023735141101569 …

Cash is only 1/3 of the world’s wealth. If Bitcoin becomes a global reserve currency even with 100% market share it still leaves 2/3 of the wealth of humans captive with third parties. Tokenization of securities & deeds places control of the assets into the hands of the owners.

Tanks can kill people whether they posses a paper certificate or the keys to a token — with a token it’s much harder for a 3rd party to sieze.

Not at all physically harder to seize, but possibly harder to defend the seizure if hauled into court, assuming court grants some authority (or at least some evidentiary weight) to the token record.

In short, tokenized off-chain things are radically different, and radically weaker, and far more dependent on legal and political winds, than on-chain cryptocurrency.

Nick, this is what my company is doing: the nasty legal/technical leg work to get those physical assets titles to be secure. http://mattereum.com  it's the @iang_fc (our chief scientist) Ricardian model with close attention to asset locks and creation of new kinds of property.

I agree they are different. However, tokenized off-chain assets are much stronger than non-tokenized off-chain assets. It all depends on which perspective or anchor you have. Compared to cryptocurrencies, tokenized off-chain assets are quite boring. And that should be just fine.

To ensure we're talking about same thing, I am using "stronger" as synonym for "better." Let me know if you're using it differently. Break fiat capital controls. True free market finds most accurate price. Greater pool of investors. Higher levels of liquidity. Easier to manage.

The same way you enforce the link between a paper share and the asset. I don't like calling it "tokenized securities" for example, because it is really just a digital version of what we already have. Thats why I call them "Digital securities" usually.

wouldnt that change if more on-chain governance would be embedded ? You can allow the seizure (or release) by a court entity on-chain. You know, like that eternal dao debate in ethereum realms :)

That is true, but there are benefits for on chain currencies if tokenized assets exist. For example, collateral-backed stablecoins should be more reliable if part of the collateral is off-chain tangible assets.
