I've heard people say they don't like at-arm's-length contracts/transactions. Yes, that's the point! Trust & the gift economy are better, but they don't scale up to our modern lifestyles--there aren't enough people who care about you enough to send you your avocados for free
In my case my in-laws have some big avocado trees, an exception that proves the rule.
