Spirals and rings of wire are the most common form of pre-coinage jewelry and a great design for trust-minimized money. They can be clipped at specific lengths to form specific payment amounts or at random places for assay.https://twitter.com/NickSzabo4/status/983890239499325440 …

"The 1.8 kilograms (4 pounds) of gold ... consists of some jewelry, but primarily spirals of gold wire, which are tied together in chains consisting of 10 spirals each. This isn't jewelry, but an ancient form of gold bullion." I call it the common ancestor of jewelry & money. https://twitter.com/Skout222/status/983882157973262336 …

Do you know how standard were the sizing was? Just looking at pictures from Germany, Denmark and Poland findings, in each site they seem pretty regular, but I didn't see any clear statements in the sources i found. I'm especially curious of uniformity across sites.

Somewhat related article describing the morphology of two specimen in detail, with some background on previous findings too. It posits they are hair ornaments:https://journals.openedition.org/archeosciences/2163#abstract-2163-en …

(it also got me excited thinking "homologous jewelry" is a technical term in archeology, which unfortunately it is not, and annoyingly presented a false color map in grayscale ;-)

Another interesting article, "The Production of Gold Wire in Antiquity" discusses wire drawing, and disputes claims that wire drawing was known as early as 1800 BC, because "hand-made gold wire can be extremely even in diameter" https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2FBF03215438.pdf …

block twisting, strip drawing, are two methods described that produce an even diameter across the length and strip twisting is described as fairly consistent. as I understood these methods, it seems like they can be used to produce consistent results, not just a single even wire

And a quote from another blog post: "For one thing, the gold was not hammered but drawn, a more advanced technique that historians didn’t think was used during the Bronze Age." http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/15215

Which also posts about bronze spirals, noting that this stash was very carefully hidden, and that the spirals were fragmented http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/34910

You’ll notice rappers are always wearing a gold chain... Holds it’s value.. Keep it around your neck, where you can keep your eye on it.. Not a terrible investment.
