These mammoth ivory beads from 32,000 BC were only used as a store and display of wealth, not a medium of exchange. Ipso facto, not money.pic.twitter.com/Wi9RBtqysa

more importantly, what possible purpose would be served by defining sports cars and Picassos as "money" - I mean, other than trying to win an argument?

by broadening your definition of money, you get a more inclusive history of similar objects that could have evolved into modern money!

you're talking to an anthropologist. No anthropologist defines "any enduring valuable" as "money" even if not used to measure or exchange other things because to do so would bring absurd results for reasons I already pointed out

maybe it seems absurd to you because it doesn't fit your preconceived notion of how money should be? believe it or not, there were societies and civilizations very different from our own that used "money" to serve different, but not unrelated, purposes.

yes & you clearly think you're making anthropological points but you're not, you're just making circular arguments. No anthropologist thinks Sungir beads were "money" just because they're durable & were (presumably) considered valuable

Do you speak for all anthropologists? Do they really all draw such conclusions from cultures like Sungir they've never observed? Even though many cultures were observed to use beads as stores of value and media of wealth transfer? One of many being https://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2017/02/conflict-and-collectibles-among-yurok_87.html …

I wrote a piece called "beads & money" I'm keenly aware of the relationship. For every society that used beads for monetary purposes there are probably 50 that don't & most of those that do use them as social currencies

"Don't" present tense (and according to what definition of money)? Early travelers & missionaries, who usually observed cultures in a state far less disrupted by development than they were by the 20th century, observed beads used as SoV & wealth transfers more often than not.
