I’m a fan of the idea outlined in “Shelling Out” that SOV objects were an emergent solution to game theoretically apparent obstacles to inter-group cooperation. It makes a hell of a lot more sense once you learn it than the money was first an accounting tool idea.

A trust-minimizing protocol is how I'd put it (i.e. minimizing the need to trust/be vulnerable to members of another clan).
