U.S. Federal Reserve to teachers and students (there will be a quiz!): “Traditionally, currency is produced by a nation's government.“ https://files.stlouisfed.org/research/publications/page1-econ/2018/03/01/bitcoin-money-or-financial-investment_SE.pdf … Education or propaganda? At the very least it is quite incomplete. The following thread fills in some of the gaps:

Ethnography was confounded by colonial bans on native institutions. Despite this many recorded use of shells as store of value & medium of wealth transfer. Shell beads go back over 100,000 years in archaeology. Copper was first smelted to make beads. https://unenumerated.blogspot.com/2017/02/conflict-and-collectibles-among-yurok_87.html …pic.twitter.com/ZDHAa1iR9R

@NickSzabo4 this is a good dyad and I'd suggest the debate now and in the future centers on blockchain being the lower half and debating what can be crammed in the upper half (and how to regulate it)! It immediately made me think of this chart I worked up and have been using...pic.twitter.com/kevFz2EKGs

Pretty good except IOUs are very different from fiat, and this chart wrongly puts some examples of IOUs (e.g. bills of exchange) in the fiat category.

Good point, I see what you mean, I'll update my working copy. I haven't made this public until now and appreciate any and all feedback.

So in terms of cryptoeconomics, maybe the central weight (not minted coin) is "censureless cryptographic mechanism" i.e. robustness against censure. This is more important than this coin or that coin or who made what, when.

But nick this is only a historical view, not an anthropological one. Currency is very very old, most likely did not develop in a centralized way.

Thanks for filling in those gaps Nick. It's propoganda. 11/29 is my birthday. It's also when bitcoin first reached $10,000. The article failed to mention that when they said it dropped 20% that morning.
