I disagree. Good design is key. Good design *can* emerge spontaneously, but looking at history, the most successful governance structures were carefully planned to solve problems of power: 3 branches of gov, purse-strings separate from executive branch, etc.

Interesting. Noting the examples of centralized systems. Does governance design in a decentralized system using centralized rules give up its autonomy? Perhaps not...

I agree, I think it may be possible to have well-designed decentralized governance

True but we cant assume that better alternatives dont exist, its worth exploring at the very least.

More recent projects have attempted to build in a formal governance structure at the protocol / blockchain level. I think that's what the original tweet was referencing.

This is rather true for real-world contracts, as well. However, time-tested form agreement provisions allow for added complexity while also reducing the risk of ambiguity (i.e. inability to enforce per they parties' intentions).

Did Ethereum actually design their current governance process? It seems more like post hoc rationalization than premeditated design.

Nearly all blockchain projects are open source. So they would generally be better off adopting mature open source governance models rather than attempting to design new ones. Though, in reality, blockchain governance tends to be more about marketing than actual game theory.

A market (strictly speaking) is one type of voluntary mechanism. There's a whole bunch more, though. Auctions, for example. Libertarian mechanism design isn't an oxymoron.

So you think governance via hard-forks is better than governance systems like decred, tezos or dfinity?

I've been saying that second sentence to friends in open source. If you've been involved in governance of Java or CNCF, blockchain or cryptocurrency is your next career step
