if we extend the analogy then miners must be certified, formally educated, their work hours detailed, hardware certified, etc.. That makes me uncomfortable for many, many reasons. I do hope their's a better approach.

There are a few things in play with mining centralization besides low energy cost. Proximity to chip fab and the math advantage of large pools are two more. There was a spec for a Proof of Ram on my twitter feed last summer, but it's lost.

The idea being that RAM is the most commoditized product their is. If you cap RAM participation between 2 and 16GB you get a very decentralized mining plant. Everyone with RAM.
