Using the tech of today, a blockchain specific smart ticketing system could scale well. Maybe well enough to handle a big sports league.

Ok. Say that "big sports league" is NBA. Does that mean "soon" = 2017-18 season? How about the one after that?

NBA was a stretch. What about running as the backend server of a transit ticketing system for a city? That might happen in 2018 or 2019
