in this case Switzerland and US are not that far off. I'm not making any assumptions on use of paper money though!
The big difference is their regulatory and cultural tolerance of large transactions in cash, not overall use.

Yes that's one factor for sure, so large legal purchases may easily be done in cash.

Excluding occasional large cash purchases 'cash in hand' could mostly be dependent on cost of living *just a guess*
