It's striking that the United States was founded by some of the people most involved in science and technology of the day.
@antonhowes Science was less a profession than a hobby of the independently wealthy, who were also often politically active.

@NickSzabo4 To a certain extent. Remember many had patrons, etc. My point tho is that the mentality was a fairly recent development -
@antonhowes Patrons were often quite active (e.g. Robert Hooke building gas pumps for his patron Robert Boyle's chemical experiments). -
@NickSzabo4 Absolutely. They often dabbled themselves. Some of my fav examples are Charles Stanhope, Patrick Miller, and Archibald Cochrane
