        BBC did a nice little documentary on this. Interesting how the British govt promoted private enterprise to build road and canal building between trade towns. France adopted using govt to build roads and then only to link military centers. https://youtu.be/UM2Aw4kmA0s  skip to 48m 30s

        Canal bridge brickwork, lock walls and wooden gates in the UK still bare the scars from the days of horse-drawn barges, the abrasiveness of the wet gritty towline could be quite destructive to anything it rubbed against.
