Simple answers 1. You can disconnect yourself from the grid by simply opening your main panel breaker. 2. Solar panels don't supply enough power by themselves to power a house. A large battery bank (such as the one supplied by Tesla) is required to accumulate power.

By your logic, whole home generators also go offline when the grid goes down. Automatic transfer switches are a solved problem.

That is incorrect. Even grid connected systems which have a battery can operate independently. Only non battery connected systems must power down if service fails.
