Do murder laws stop murderers? That's hyperbole though. The government's stated goal of trying to "protect" people from themselves, is just cover and spin, when it's really about taxes and protecting tobacco corporations from competition. Banning straws is just as dumb.
Perhaps, the reasons they are dumb are extremely different, and it's entirely possible to come to different conclusions on each without a trace of hypocrisy.
