Why do so many countries end in the letter “a” or the letters “ia”?

Western geographers named countries by Latinizing a name & giving it a feminine ending indicating "land of or discovered by X." e.g. America = feminine of "Americus", in turn a Latinization of Amerigo Vespucci, credited by early mapmakers as discovering the new continent.
