On the invention front, the ‘desire to beautify has always been driving the ingenuity of mechanics’ - to quote CS Smith. Once the invention reaches a stage it’s ready for replication and wider use, then we’re talking about various mechanisms of innovation, like prestige bias etc
Does religion fit in there as well, right after aesthetics?
Probably in a broad sense as part of culture; I’ve come to realise that culture plays as important role as technological choices in the ways we choose which metals to produce, when and how. But - there’s more to be added from other experts for a more complete reply!
I wouldn’t be claiming to have the final answer even if I were the only expert in the field! This is a collegial business with all of us standing on each other shoulders while pursuing that holy grail of ‘the truth’ :)
They weren't primarily about symbolism, though, otherwise they would have chosen less costly objects that could carry more info. Instead more costly materials were favored -- these were Veblen goods, displays and stores and media for occasional but important transfers of wealth.
