Mattis says he owes the USA a "period of silence" after resigning, but that didn't stop him from writing a book and going on a media junket. He uses "military rectitude" to deflect criticism; Defense Sec. is a civilian role (though that distinction got elided during his tenure)

The main domestic threat Mattis identifies is "divisiveness" and a "lack of respect." That would be dismissed as meaningless pablum if it weren't delivered by someone in a position of perceived military authority, which inspires automatic reverence (including among the media)

Replying to @mtracey
"Lack of respect" == expects the same behavior from civilians as from military subordinates.
