Not their job. A phone number is not a general ID or a security token. It is just a short number made up by a phone company for the purpose of using that company to call or text. The problem is it is used so widely as a form of id. Just bad security design everywhere. Companies pick the easy way out. A phone number is terrible I.D.

Of course it is. ^_^ Pretty much everything is a terrible form of ID, hence multiple layers of security are required.

Never said, nor implied, it was "secure" ID. Just said it was used as ID. All forms of "ID" are spoofable. :P Even "In person" meetings can spoof another person entirely with high quality silicone masks, contact lenses, and fingerprint overlay.
